As Karl Rove and other shameless Bush apologists try desperately to burnish the President’s reputation in his final weeks in office, “W” himself displays a stunning insouciance at the terrible wreckage he leaves behind. Even worse, his perennial smirk and swagger convey an “up yours” attitude that will do nothing to heal the gigantic rift in American society that he has created in his monumentally failed 8-year presidency.
Like the coward who slinks away from the terrible accident he has caused, George W. Bush hopes to hide from his awful responsibilities in blissful retirement at his Crawford ranch. He hopes, too, that we will all “forgive and forget”. No, Mr. Bush, we will not forgive, and will not forget. Nor will historians, who will undoubtedly record the Bush administration as the destroyer of a once-great nation.
Barack Obama has reignited our hopes for recovery, but the hole that George W. Bush has dug us into is very, very deep. January 20, 2009 marks the end of an error. Good riddance to the incurious incompetent who led us astray.
