GOP hyperventilating over supposed voter fraud perpetrated by ACORN and other organizations is of a piece with the fear-mongering, dissembling and deception by conservatives in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. There is absolutely no evidence, from any credible source, that fraudulent registrations have ever amounted to more than a minuscule percentage of total voter registrations, and thus have had no impact on election outcomes (read Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s views on this). Vastly more significant, and sinister, are decades-long efforts by GOP operatives to suppress registrations by minorities and lower income voters, on the quite correct theory that when those voters go to the polls, Republicans lose. While ACORN’s efforts focus on educating minority and lower-income voters on their rights as American citizens, GOP efforts focus on duping those same voters with well-financed disinformation and fear campaigns. Unable to win votes from this large and growing segment of the US population based on the merits of their programs and ideology, Republicans routinely resort to these cynical tactics. Can anything be more un-American / un-patriotic than this? Can anyone be more rabidly, belligerently ignorant on this subject than Rush Limbaugh, the pilonidal pansy with the patriot pin?
