Peggy Noonan’s scripted, cynical blast of Barack Obama’s acceptance speech is more than just sour grapes from a (formerly) superb speechwriter who apparently can’t stand to see a Democrat one-up her beloved Great Communicator. Pity that she could not at least summon the grace to congratulate Obama on this singular moment in American political history. The torch has passed, Ms. Noonan, and you and your ilk are left outside the glow, huddled in the cold neocon wasteland with the other whimpering acolytes of a conservative ideology that has been virtually destroyed by the incompetent torchbearer of the past 8 years. The irony is that Obama is more like Ronald Reagan in his soaring, inspirational rhetoric than any of the current GOP leadership, and is able to motivate voters across the social and political spectrum to join together in a bi-partisan, united endeavor – seeking to regain the “shining city on the hill” that President Reagan invoked in many of his speeches. Ronald Reagan would not recognize the Republican Party of today, a party that – like Ms. Noonan – must now be relegated to the ash heap of history.
