The manufactured outrage spewing from the Clinton and McCain camps over Sen. Obama’s “bitter” remarks will surely backfire on both attackers for one simple reason: Obama spoke the truth, and everyone but Hillary and McCain knows it (read Thomas Frank’s “What’s the Matter with Kansas” for the deep story on this). In the cynical calculus of the neocons who put George W. Bush into the White House, so-called lunch-bucket voters have been easy marks, duped into voting for bogus Republicans who seduced them with social wedge issues (“family values”, same-sex marriage, etc.) while simultaneously undermining their economic well-being. These voters are justifiably bitter, and not about to be duped again. Hillary is getting very bad advice from her campaign staff in taking this position. I thought she was smarter than that.
