Obama swept the Democratic caucus in my Washington precinct today by more than 4:1 over Hillary Clinton. The energy and momentum in the Obama camp is extraordinary, with many of the comments at the caucus focused on his ability to inspire Americans across the political spectrum. There will be real costs and hardships to bear as we work to undo the terrible damage done to our country by the Bush Administration; in that context, Obama’s positive energy was felt to be a more important character trait than Sen. Clinton’s “experience”. A number of caucus-goers noted that although they prefer Sen. Clinton, they fear that if she were the Democratic nominee the Republican attack machine would be merciless in destroying her prospects. That is the great shame of our current state of politics; a Republican party that is incapable of building, but only of destroying. Neo-coward Mitt Romney’s exit speech slamming Democrats as “surrendering to terrorists” was only the latest, and most despicable example of this right-wing fear-mongering. Let the “Inspirer” now usurp the “Decider”, and lift us all out of our funk.
