I happened to be in New York City on the day Al Gore was announced as the winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Of course, it was immediately clear that the neocon establishment, which has for years fed on Gore hatred, would not be pleased by this recognition of their nemesis. I was unprepared, however, for the extraordinary display of small-mindedness shown by the Wall Street Journal, whose Bush-fawning editors could not bring themselves to congratulate a former Vice President of the United States on his achievement. Trumping the WSJ, however, was the New York Post, the “newspaper” of record for the conservative ignorati (lots of pictures, with a bit of comic-book style prose), with its “How Convenient” headline slur. A pox on both their houses. May they search in vain for equivalent recognition of their poster boy, George W. Bush, whose catastrophic failures have come to define the conservative movement, and which have condemned the GOP to decades (we hope) on the sidelines of American politics.
