I read a very interesting post today from Jane Smiley (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-smiley/coulter-cheney-bush-wh_b_42765.html) in which she describes the Bush/Cheney/Coulter brand of “conservatism” as “beyond reason … an uncontrollable pathology”. Coulter’s pathology, in particular, seems very much like a political Tourettes Syndrome: “a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary tics and vocalizations and often the compulsive utterance of obscenities”.
Wow! I think Jane has nailed the diagnosis – neocons and wingnuts on the right suffer from an ideologically induced pathology that makes it impossible for them to see the light of reason, if reason and facts conflict with their worldview. Thus, mindless mantras such as “stay the course” in the face of obvious failure. Perhaps there is a pill for this disease, or a nice quiet cell in a secure institution high in the mountains where the most advanced cases (Bush et al) can be kept from doing any more harm.
