The revelations of squalid conditions and long delays in treatment of returning wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital make it abundantly clear what “support the troops” means for Republicans. Compounding the fraud of a senseless war in Iraq, promoted by neo-cowards who never served their country in uniform, we now see the shabby neglect of the tens of thousands of horribly broken men and women returning from W’s debacle. Shades of New Orleans, no?
The public, and Congressional Democrats, have the wisdom to know that true support for our troops means getting them out of the middle of Iraq’s brutal civil war, and bringing them home as fast as possible. Thinking Republicans know, too, that this is the wisest course of action, but they are maddeningly incapable of dissent. It is said that Republicans do not abandon a Republican president in time of war. Given the choice between true support for the brave men and women in our armed services, and ditching a stunningly incompetent Administration, Republicans had better make the right choice now, or their prospects in 2008 will be less than grim.
