It is now crystal clear that W’s plan to deploy an additional 21,000 troops to Iraq (an “augmentation” in neocon-speak) is nothing more than a carefully-crafted set up. The proposal has been advanced by the President in the full knowledge that it would likely be shot down by Congress (even by formerly loyal Republican members) and blasted in the court of public opinion as “too little, too late”. Iraq is now spiraling irretrievably into chaos and civil war, and Bush’s “new way forward” cannot change this. If he cannot have his way, we are in for two more years of infantile whining, blame-shifting and finger-pointing. Has this man, and his malevolent side-kick Cheney, no shame?
