Today’s round of sectarian slaughter in Iraq yields 200 Shia’s blown to bits. Tomorrow’s mayhem will no doubt yield similar stats on the Sunni side of the street. 140,000 American troops caught in the middle can not prevent this wanton slaughter, and cannot impose democracy on a culture that knows nothing of shared goals and shared sacrifices. No more American blood should be shed, or treasure spent, on this hopeless enterprise. The vicious blood-lust of Iraqis must be allowed to play itself out; when the last Kurd, Shia and Sunni are left standing, perhaps they can find a way to reconcile their differences. How ironic that the Cradle of Civilization in Mesopotamia has degenerated into such a cauldron of uncivilized brutality!
